Eat Your Vegetables with Lycopene
Friday, April 24, 2009
The healthy tip for the day is to eat your vegetables with lycopene such as tomatoes. A new study published in the Journal of Nutrition showed that increasing intake of antioxidant in the family known as Carotenoids may reduce the risk of developing the metabolic syndrome by approximately 50 percent.
The carotenoid Lyocopene was shown to be associated with improved symptoms. The
Study lead by Ivonne Sluijs from the University Medical Center Utrecht showed that higher lycopene was relted to lower serum triglycerides.
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a condition characterised by central obesity, hypertension, and disturbed glucose and insulin metabolism. The syndrome has been linked to increased risks of both type 2 diabetes and CVD.
Sluijs and her co-workers report that high intakes of all these compounds was associated with lower incidence of the syndrome, and that lycopene and beta-carotene in particular were linked to apparent protective effects.
So make sure to eat your tomatoes or your lycopene rich supplements which have been shown to support health.
Wishing you all the best!
