Curcumin

Monday, April 27, 2009

For the health tip of the day, curcumin which is a natural pigment that gives the spice turmeric a yellow color has been shown to reduce and prevent weight gain in animals. This may be new research to help support the fight against obesity.
Investigators from the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University in Boston published their findings in the Journal of Nutrition.

The researchers suggest that curcumin may actually suppress new tissue growth in fat tissue and may also affect the metabolism of existing fat tissue by reducing it.

“The curcumin suppression of angiogenesis in adipose tissue together with its effect on lipid metabolism in adipocytes may contribute to lower body fat and body weight gain,” wrote the authors, led by Asma Ejaz from the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University. “Our findings suggest that dietary curcumin may have a potential benefit in preventing obesity.”

Curcumin in turmeric is found in many different supplements since many cultures do not eat it regularly in the diet.

wishing you the best of heatlh!
