Pomegranate Juice
Tuesday, April 28, 2009
For the health tip of the day, its all about pomegranate juice. As many of you know, I've been working with my mentor at UCLA, Dr. David Heber for 20 years. Dr. Heber has numerous publications, and this week his colleagues published more on the science of plant nutrients and health. A new publication shows that pomegranate juice may help to support men who have undergone treatment for prostate cancer.
According to findings published in the Journal of Urology and presented at the 104th Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Urological Association (AUA), a daily glass of pomegranate juice affected the doubling time of a marker in the blood called the Prostate Specific Antigen, a marker commonly used to screen for cancer and also used to track the disease after diagnosis.
This study suggests that pomegranate juice may effectively slow the progression of prostate cancer after unsuccessful treatment," said Christopher Amling, MD, spokesperson for the AUA. "This finding and other ongoing research might one day reveal that pomegranate juice is an effective prostate cancer preventative agent as well."
Pomegranate, a rich source of antioxidants, has been linked to improved heart health, but a growing body of science indicates the fruit protect against prostate cancer. Studies have also reported a role in joint health by slowing cartilage loss in arthritis.
So be sure to get your daily fruit and vegetable intake and try some pomegranate juice when you can. wishing you all the best!
sincerely,
Dr. Luigi
