Avocados and their health benefits
Saturday, May 30, 2009
For the nutrition tip of the day, I spoke with the famous Dr. David Heber from the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition about avocados and their health benefits.
As you know, many fats are healthy, others are unhealthy. Doctors generally recommend to avoid the Saturated fats like butter in large amounts. Instead, doctors generally suggest eating unsaturated fats. The two well known unsaturated fats are MONOunsaturated and POLYunsaturated. The POLYunsaturated fats includes the omega 3 fish oils and flax seed oil. The MONOunsaturated fats include those in olive oil, nuts and avocados.
Dr. Heber's research in food has shown that as avocados age and change color getting darker, the amount of healthy MONOunsaturated fats tends to increase. This means when you go shopping for food, make sure to find the nice ripe avocados when picking them in the store.
Wishing you all the best of health!
Dr. Luigi
